What’s YOUR Rhythm?

Not your taste in music, what’s the rhythm of your life? Each of us has one: The Rhythm of Life. It’s a way of thinking about how we live about how we life as followers of Jesus- how we worship, pray, serve, give and grow in faith together.

The Rhythm of Life is not a program or a checklist. It is woven in to everything we do at St. John’s - our worship, our ministries, our learning, and our life together as parish. In a sense, it is like the trellis on which the vine grows. Just as a trellis supports a vine so that it can flourish and bear fruit, these spiritual practices help support and build our life in Christ.

This isn’t about adding more to an already busy schedule. Instead, it’s about entering our lives on God. It’s about asking: Are my daily rhythms helping me experience the presence of GOD? And if not, what small shifts might help me live more fully in step with God’s grace?

The idea of behind this comes from a very ancient Christian practice sometimes called a “rule of life.” The book of Common Prayer reminds us that every Christian should from time to time, shape a pattern of life that alligns with the Gsopel. The Rhythm of Life helps us do just that in a way that is flexible, personal and -by God’s grace - completely doable.

At St. John’s we focus on five simple principles:

Worship - Gathering weekly to worship God and keep a holy rhythm of rest

Prayer & Study - Engaging with Scripture and prayer daily, and growing in faith with others.

Service - Using our gifts to bless the church and community.

Generosity - Giving as we are able to support God’s work.

Faithful Living - Bringing Christ’s teachings into our daily lives and sharing our faith openly.

Some of these practices may already be a natural part of your life. Others may feel like a challenge. That’s perfectly all right. The goal isn’t perfection - it’s participation.

When we shaper our lifestyle around Christ in these simple ways, we begin to discover something beautiful: a life that grows steadily, deeply, and joyfully in God.

We are pleased to offer a Lenten Supplement to our  parish Daily Prayer booklet. Since its release last fall, many have found the booklet a steady and faithful companion in establishing a daily rhythm of Scripture and prayer. This new Lenten resource builds on that foundation, offering additional readings, reflections, and prayers shaped especially for the holy season of Lent. These devotions are designed to align with the classic Lenten practices of self-examination, repentance, and renewal. They may be used alongside the Daily Prayer booklet—available on our website and in print at St. John’s—or each devotion may be used on its own. We pray that this resource will support you in keeping a faithful and fruitful Lent, and that it may deepen your walk with Christ as we journey together toward Easter. You can download a copy on our website or pick one up at church all through the Lenten season.
