Repair Cafe Port Hope's next event will be ANNOUNCED WHEN AVAILABLE, 10am-2pm
Repair Café Port Hope is part of the Repair Café international movement which has as its goals:
repair over replace to reduce waste
connecting community through the sharing of skills.
Doors will open to the public at 10:00 and close at 2:00, but we are asking volunteers to arrive at 9:00 so that we can all be set up and running when the first guests arrive. As always, beverages, snacks and lunch will be provided.
Three local artists will be showing some of their work upstairs during the Café, and Ted Staunton will be performing for the young and young-at-heart in the garden; in case of poor weather, then in the lower hall).
To help as a fixer, with food prep, kids activities, etc., please contact Penny Nutbrown at pmnutbrown@gmail.com. For more info and photos of past events, see our FaceBook page here.
History
Repair Café is a program that connects volunteer fixers with folks who have items in need of repair. The first Repair Café was held in the Netherlands in 2009, and since that time cafés have sprouted up all around the world. St. John’s has been hosting café’s since February of 2020. The cafés here at St. John’s are more than just a place to repair rather than replace broken things. Cafés are also opportunities for neighbours to get to know each other over food and beverages. Local non-profit organizations often have representatives at the cafés letting people know about the work they do. Repair cafés also host classes in such hands-on skills as sewing, woodworking, basketry and spoon carving. Repair Café is funded through a combination of grants from Community Power Northumberland and donations from attendees. Repair Café Port Hope is one way that St. John’s is active in the larger community and also offers folks a chance to get to know us better. Come and check out the next café and see what it’s all about.
